In flight, their heads are held lower than their bodies, giving almost a hunch- back appearance. In summer, the common loon has an all black head separated by a broken white collar, which distinguishes it from red-throat- ed and Arctic loons. Winter coloration has more whites and grays. The common loon prefers secluded lakes and is highly territorial. Usually, only a single pair is found on smaller lakes.
